MOVE (Markets, Organizations and Votes in Economics) was born into the rich academic and research environment of the Economics Department at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). The success story that has brought Barcelona economists to play a significant role in European economics started here in the 1970’s, and Bellaterra economists have ever since maintained a leading role in that process.
MOVE was jointly created in December 2008 as a research consortium by the Catalan Ministry for Universities and Research and the UAB. Salvador Barberà was appointed to be its first director in the summer of 2009. We are thus in the first stages of MOVE’s development.
The creation of MOVE is the most recent step in a long journey that researchers at the Bellaterra campus of UAB have shared with many others in order to place Spain and Southern Europe on the map of excellence for teaching and research in Economics.
Bellaterra was the first and largest source of Spanish PhD students that helped the building of our profession, in the 70’s and 80’s. From 1976 to 2000 it was home for the first 25 Symposia of Economic Analysis, from which the Spanish Economic Association was born, as well as the first form of an economist’s organized job market In Europe. The Economics Department at UAB was a founding member of the Association of Southern European Economic Theorists (ASSET) , which initially gathered then small research groups in the South, as Toulouse or Marseille, and ended up extending to Portugal an all over the Mediterranean shores, to Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey and Israel. Organizing the 1990 World Congress of the Econometric Society was an important step toward the establishment of Barcelona as an attractive place for economic research.
In 1992 the UAB launched Spain´s first international PhD program in Economics, IDEA, which has successfully trained more than 120 doctors, now working all over the world.
In 1995 the Center for the Study of Organizations and Decisions in Economics (CODE) was created as an internal research center of UAB, in order to facilitate the work of active research groups within the Economics Department.
CODE has been the seed for MOVE, which is an ambitious initiative, geared to provide new strength to the constant and successful efforts of the UAB faculty to make the Bellaterra Campus and Barcelona a beacon of Economics research in Europe.
With the arrival of new institutions, like the Institute of Economic Analysis, also on the Bellaterra campus, and of the Economics Department of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, or the Center for Research in Internacional Economics (CREI), economics in Barcelona took new turns and become a much richer scene, one that was also recently enhanced by the creation of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, which joins the efforts of all these active groups toward the development of new educational opportunities, and to cooperation in different fields.
MOVE is an integral part of this tendency to enrich economic research in the Barcelona area. We build on a long and shared history, partly written by those who now join forces again to offer new employment possibilities, new and improved working conditions, and the chance of extending the coverage of our research to a higher level than ever before.
Based on past achievement, we look to the future.
